The National Service Scheme, NSS, was introduced in Ghana in May 1973. It was established by an Act of Parliament, NRCD 243, to inculcate in the youth the spirit of selfless service to the community and to the nation at large, as well as to develop their civic consciousness and social skills. It also provides them with opportunities to enhance their personal development and skills, as well as their ability to contribute to the development of the country.
The NSS is open to all tertiary level students, both Ghanaian and foreign. It is a voluntary service and therefore, its benefits accrue to both the individual and the society. The NSS is managed by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service.
