What was Russia called before the Soviet Union?

Before 1917, the territory of Russia did not have a nation-state, but was part of the Russian Empire ruled by a German family, the house of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov. When it left the USSR in 1992, the Russian republic renamed itself the Russian Federation, also a multinational country of over 150 native peoples.
